On August 24, Grovites Greg McMullen and this writer met with Fire Island National Seashore (FINS) Chief Ranger Lena B. Koschmann and Deputy Chief Ranger John Stewart to air our concerns about the Meat Rack, the wooded area between Cherry Grove and Fire Island Pines, formally known as the Carrington Tract.
We found that one matter about which we found ourselves in agreement was taking action concerning the persistent littering of what should be a pristine natural environment. While some of us already address the situation by taking it upon ourselves to put up trash bags there and take them out when full, the FINS officials proposed a larger effort, in partnership, and the immediate result will be a day of cleanup, now scheduled for Saturday, September 15 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., with the rangers providing trash bags, gloves, sticks for picking up the trash, and dump trucks that can cart the trash to Long Island. The rain date is Sunday, September 16 at the same time.
Volunteers should meet at the benches at the easternmost end of Bayview Walk, in the Grove, and Greg is donating Meat Rack t-shirts, adorned with the image of a buck, to the first 25 participants.
I think we all hope that this will be a productive and peaceful venture and will promote mutual understanding between the rangers and concerned citizens of the Grove and the Pines.
