At its easternmost extreme, Bayview Walk, in Cherry Grove, has generally ended with a platform with a pair of benches, once facing and now perpendicular to each other, followed by a gentle descent into the ‘Meat Rack,’ in recent years a common thoroughfare, through the woods, between the Grove and Fire Island Pines.
This season, those making the trek have been faced with an abrupt drop from that platform, either jumping or climbing up or down a jerry-rigged system of tree trunks and boards, as the Great South Bay has eroded the land beneath the boardwalk.
At the end of July, however, the Town of Brookhaven Highway Department built a much-needed ramp, sloping down from the platform and continuing to the start of the wooded area, ending the necessity for any potentially treacherous leap or climb.
