Beside her Friday afternoon Fun ’n’ Gaymes on the Ice Palace deck, Sybil Bruncheon takes the Sunday brunch crowd at Top of the Bay by storm, at noon-ish, with—well you never know exactly what is going to happen, but here’s how it went on the 3rd of June:
Paint brushes in hand, beret on her head, and sporting an artsy, Picasso-inspired smock, La Bruncheon announced that she’d been painting at the beach, is looking for nude models, and showed off a needlepoint of a cherry pie that she’d been working on.
Our Sybil turned to topics in the news: 1. “People in America are beginning to practice cannibalism again—an epidemic or a diet plan?” and she feigned ordering “faccia Bolognese” from Chef Stephen Daniello. 2. “Is the world coming to an end?” and 3. The Queen’s Jubilee—“Should we care?” Marc Crockett queried, rhetorically, “Why doesn’t she step down?” but Joe Clinton retorted, “Because it’s a long way.” In a bit of a detour, Sybil outed Puerto Rico-born waiter Hugo as one of the Romanoffs—“the one that escaped from the basement.” Harold Pinter wound up in the discussion’s mix as well.
À propos of Sybil’s beret, hats were a major theme of the afternoon. The M & Ms—Michael Moran and Matthew George—and their friends, comic Yamaneika—watch for her again soon at Ariel Sinclair’s Kamikaze Kabaret at the Ice Palace; choreographer and singer David Auxier; Homeless Taylor; and Michael from the Ice Palace all came to Bruncheon’s brunch event, wearing most festive hats. Ever prepared, Sybil came with her own hat box and generously brought hats for audience members to wear. And the grand finale of her show was a hat contest, with all three prizes won by the M & Ms’ contingent.
Catch Sybil Bruncheon at noon-ish on Sundays at Top of the Bay and at 5 p.m. on Fridays at the Grove Hotel on the Ice Palace deck.
