Pianist Jack Aaronson, who used to play at the Tides’ Cozy Bar and Marie’s Crisis in New York City, was Music Director for Sal Piro’s Arts Project of Cherry Grove show “Panzi and Philomena Meet Frankenstein,” and has contributed his talents to benefits for the Pines Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) and the Stein Foundation, run by the owners of Sayville Ferry Service, is now pianist-in-residence for sing-alongs in the ‘tin room’ in the new Sand Castle on the Ocean restaurant and bar on Monday and Tuesday nights.
When I caught up with Jack on June 18, Sand Castle’s Paul Martin Kovic was ushering in his birthday by singing with the pianist. The music we made on that night included selections from Broadway musicals “Once” and “Newsies;” a rainbow ‘group’—“Over the Rainbow,” “Rainbow Connection,” and two songs from “Evita;” assorted show tunes by Stephen Schwartz, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Flaherty and Ahrens, Leonard Bernstein, George Gershwin, and Cole Porter; and Henry Mancini’s “Moon River,” from the film “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.”
