In “a real nail biter,” as Sal Piro, calling the volleyball games of the annual Cherry Bowl Tournament, on August 3, put it, the Grovettes, the Cherry Grove team, rallied to beat the visiting Copettes, the Suffolk County police team, in the deciding third game. The Grovettes handily beat the Copettes 25 to 17 in the first game, the cops trounced the home team 25 to 7 in the second, but the Grovettes rallied in the tie-breaking game, winning with a score of 22 to 20. Doreen Rallo served as referee.
After the opening parade, led by flag bearers Paul Jablonski and Denise Harbin, Kelly King sang the “Star Spangled Banner” and Cherry Queen Jason Cozmo threw out the first ball. Assisted by DJ Chuck McTague, Porsche sang at halftime and the Cherry Tarts, the cheerleaders, assembled into a pyramid, with Copettes as the base. Assisted by the Tarts and Grovettes Team Captain Sue Panzer, Lavinia Draper, who put her bra on one of the shirtless Copettes near the end of the second game, sang—“Let’s hear it for the boy”—between that game and the final one, and the Suffolk County Police Emerald Society Pipe and Drum Corps played “God Bless America,” “Over Here,” and “When the Saints Go Marching In.” Between two of the games, Sal saluted two individuals present who were also involved with the first games in 1984, Mark Atten, still playing for the Grovettes, and flag bearer Tall Paul.
