Singer Porsche and DJ Chuck McTague finished their season at the Ice Palace on September 25, but one show still remained for them, and that took place across Bayview Walk, at Island Breeze restaurant on September 30 and, consequently, both shows evinced some of the emotion of a season finale.
Porsche bid farewell to summer, singing “We’re on vacation, we’re gonna have a ball,” and “My sweet joy, always remember me.” She sang “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend,” from “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes,” as both the film and Broadway stage Lorelei Lees, Marilyn Monroe and Carol Channing, and as Megan Mullally as Karen Walker as well. At Joyce Rodgers’ request, she went country and sang Tammy Wynette’s “Stand by Your Man.”
Versatile Porsche honored jazz greats Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday with an upbeat “A Tisket, a Tasket” and smoky and dramatic “(Hush now,) Don’t Explain,” respectively. After “Perhaps,” the Doris Day song, Porsche jumped ahead to the psychedelic ’60s with Grace Slick’s “White Rabbit,” Sabel Scities’ request, then back to the present day with some Adele (“Rumor has it”) and Amy Winehouse (“I’m no good”). There was some crowd-pleasing Annie Lennox (“Everybody is looking for something,” “The more I love you”) and then, looking forward to Christmas, a sultry “Santa Baby,” purred and growled Eartha Kitt-style.
Porsche addressed that “Pretty Woman” and declared, “I’m Holding out for a Hero,” and returned to a song she used to sing at Sunsets, when she first came to Fire Island a decade ago (“Because the night belongs to lovers”).
Porsche took leave of us with favorite Janis Joplin number “Piece of My Heart;” “Suddenly Seymour,” from “Little Shop of Horrors,” in emotion-laden duet with Chuck; bracing “Ladies Who Lunch,” from “Company,” as Elaine Stritch; and “Make Your Own Kind of Music,” which she certainly does.
Catch Porsche in at the Stonewall Inn, on Christopher Street in the Village, on October 7.
