costume contest winners (left to right) Fire Island Fairy Flies James, Lola, Margo & Coco; Cherry Grove Whorse Steven Menendez; & Angela Mercy as Poison Ivy, with MC Bella
Donald Labohn and Evan Kane, AKA Sylvia and Shirley Shapiro, brought a whole Meat Rack-full of tree branches, leaves, and pine needles into the Ice Palace, and Mary DiFede’s guests from Seattle—Everett, Heath, David and Vicky—lit them all with twinkling firefly lights to create a magical setting for the Arts Project of Cherry Grove’s (APCG) season finale, the “Into the Woods” gala ball on September 24. Bella served as Mistress of Ceremonies and Ice Palace DJ Chuck McTague was responsible for music.
Coco Love, AKA departing APCG President Michael Coffindaffer, as a Fairy Fly or firefly, complete with a green light tail, worked the room performing “You Light up My Life.” Homecoming Queen YaNeeda Dunes, ending her reign, offered a country number (“I need you now”), backed by Doreen Rallo and Bobbie Green. With the woods as backdrop, Philomena declared, “I’ll plant my own tree,” in the number from “Valley of the Dolls,” and Donna Piranha insisted, “Oh, it must be love,” in the Etta James song.
Gimmi Hoffa, usher for theatrical productions at the Community House; Lorraine Michels, photographer; and Richard “Urban Sprawl” Cooley, wizard of wigs and makeup, won APCG Community Service Awards, and APCG’s new President-Elect, Martha Pitkin, presented Coco/Michael with a special award for six years of service, two on the Board of Directors and four as President.
Attendees competed in a costume contest, judged by “Lamby” (Eddie Galante), Evan, past APCG President Ceejay Rosen, Martha, and Sue Rayson, and winners were, in the singles category, Angela Mercy as Poison Ivy; in the couples category, Joan Van Ness and Lorraine as the Charmin bear and Just A Tree; as best group, Coco, Margo, Lola and James as the Fire Island Fairy Flies; and deemed most spectacular, Steven Menendez as an equine Cherry Grove Whorse.
Hors d’oeuvres, dinner and dessert were by S.H.K. catering.
