On July 9, in anticipation of the annual Cherry Bowl Tournament, held on the first Wednesday afternoon in August, the Arts Project of Cherry Grove offered a Title IX tea, honoring the Grovettes volleyball team, in particular, and women in sports, in general. Ninety-seven people attended the tea, hosted by Martha Pitkin, Mel Rock and Don Robb, at the home of Mel and Don, and enjoyed Grove Girls with Guitars’ singing and playing of Meg Christian’s “Ode to a Gym Teacher,” as well as a game of ‘Name that Athlete,’ and refreshments. Sue Panzer, the Grovettes team captain, was in attendance. Homecoming Queen 2010 Beach DeBree and reigning Queen YaNeeda Dunes came as Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan, recreating the ice skaters’ famous feud.
