Numerous colleagues and fans turned out, at the Ice Palace on June 18, to help peerless singer Porsche celebrate in style the 10th anniversary of her first performance in Cherry Grove, with DJ Chuck McTague giving invaluable assistance on music and sound.
After Porsche demonstrated her versatility by singing “All That Jazz” as Cher, Eartha Kitt, Judy Garland and Macy Grey might have, the tributes began, with Logan Hardcore’s number (“I’m part of a terrific Sister Act”) and a roasting by Bianca Del Rio. Nightlife icon Kenny Holcomb, from Broadway at the Beach, joined Porsche in duet for the first time, his “Happy Days Are Here Again” sung against her “Get Happy.” Miss Fire Island 2009 Renée Flaming said a few words in tribute, Miss FI 2010 Sabel Scities did an Erika Badu number (“Call Tyrone”), and Miss FI 1968, the second-ever, Charity honored Porsche with the Phoebe Snow version of “Piece of My Heart.” Island Breeze manager Kenny Braun and the Ice Palace’s Johnny Doyle offered salutes, and after Porsche’s pair of contrasting Etta James songs—a romantic “At Last,” sung to Marge Cozzolino, followed by “Someone’s got a hold on me”—Porsche fans par excellence the M&Ms performed “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” for her and us.
Daniel Nardicio and Gusty Winds said a few words; Gusty, assisted by a pair of nun puppets, queried, “How do you solve a problem like Maria?” and Porsche sang Madonna’s “Vogue,” while Gusty interpreted it in ‘drag sign language.’
Grove Hotel and Ice Palace Manager Sal Piro joined Porsche for a duet of “Ladies Who Lunch,” after which Sal presented Porsche with a plaque commending her “for 10 years of entertainment and happiness.” Cupcake (Brian Cash) baked a 10th anniversary cake, with raspberry and lemon icing, in Porsche’s honor. Porsche continued with “California Dreaming,” “Make Your Own Kind of Music,” “Jolene,” “To Sir with Love” and, at this writer’s request, “History Repeating.”
“Stand by Your Man,” “Smooth Operator,” and “Summertime,” Janis Joplin-style, were among Porsche’s final songs of the evening, after which Shannon presented her with a bouquet. It was, in sum, a fitting salute to a beloved artist.
