Charity and Jason Cozmo headlined a diva doubleheader at Cherry’s, on June 13, in their first shows of the season, offering, with their guests, a combined total of almost 40 songs.
Trouper Charity’s sold-out performance was part of the Cherry’s Dining with the Divas series and DJ Kevin Hammond assisted. “I’m giving you the standards and I’m giving you the blues,” Charity announced, and she indeed did.
The theme song from “Goldfinger” was her dramatic opening number, which she followed up by declaring, “The world is a showplace,” and seductively inviting “Baby, take off your coat … your shoes” [but] “you can leave your hat on.” She milked “What now, my love?” for its fullest measure of pathos, triumphing over a somewhat recalcitrant bodice; bewitched us with that “Old Devil Moon;” and sang a breathy “Happy Birthday” to Sofina.
Charity’s guest Dan Schlageter wrapped his honeyed baritone around the likes of “Danke Schön,” “That’s Life,” and “The Summer Wind.” Robin Kradles, as a fairy princess, complete with magic wand, sang a lovely “When You Wish upon a Star” and, in glitzier garb, told us what it takes “(to get to) The Big Time.” “Misty,” “The Lies of Handsome Men,” and “You’re Gonna Hear from Me” were Robin’s other songs. She’ll have her own show yet!
Charity finished with “I Got Rhythm,” “Making Whoopee,” and a slow and moody “I Could Have Danced All Night.”
With DJ Manny assisting, creative Jason, upbeat as Dolly Parton, announced that “They’re having a party just two doors down” and continued with “Nine to Five,” before turning to the song about that man-snatching “Jolene,” dedicated to all drag queens. Jason recruited Logan Hardcore, Robin, Andrew from Marie’s Crisis, Christian, Steve from Top of the Bay, and reigning Miss Fire Island Sabel Scities to participate in an impromptu production number, with audience participation, of “Little Bitty Pissant Country Place,” from “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas,” concluding with a kick line, and ended the Dolly segment with “I Will Always Love You.”
Guest Sabel burned up the stage with “River deep, mountain high” and, as “Mommie Dearest” Joan Crawford, cleverly intermingled dialogue from the scene of Crawford’s dismissal from the Pepsi Cola Board of Directors (“Don’t fuck with me, fellas!”) with “I who have nothing” and “It’s my life.” Charity contributed another hot number. Robin encored her song from the PAWS benefit—“You’re in the doghouse now”—but sans boy ‘puppy’ to sing it to. Dan returned to lend his golden voice to “I was meant for you,” “Witchcraft,” and “To make you feel my love.”
Jason introduced his portrayal of Bette Midler, cavorting to “Going to the Chapel” and “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B” and pressed Danny, from the Cubbyhole, into playing her irresistible dentist, Dr. Longjohn.
