Singer Porsche and DJ Chuck McTague made their welcome seasonal return to the Ice Palace on May 14, offering both familiar songs and songs new to their repertory.
Singing lyrically, Porsche opened her show by heralding, “V-a-c-a-t-i-o-n in the summer sun,” following it with the Beatles’ “Help,” and having Johnny Doyle demonstrate the stage’s new curtain, which unfurls like the Metropolitan Opera’s.
Versatile Porsche demonstrated her many voices by singing “All That Jazz,” from “Chicago,” as Cher, Eartha Kitt, Marilyn Monroe, Carol Channing, Judy Garland, Macy Gray, and Janis Joplin might. She continued with songs from England “Always remember me,” a Noisettes number, which she dedicated to Miss Fire Island 2010 Sabel Scities, and “Rolling in the deep” (“We could have had it all”). She sang some Karen Carpenter (“Don’t you remember you told me you love me, baby?”), some Bette Midler (“Stuff like that there”) and, in jazzy mode, Billie Holiday’s uncommonly upbeat “Them There Eyes” and Ella Fitzgerald’s “A Tisket, A Tasket.”
Porsche also treated us to romantic renditions of “At Last” and “Sway with Me,” and a little bit of rock—a lively “I Love Rock and Roll”—and a little bit of country—Dolly Parton’s “Here You Come Again.”
Porsche’s guests were Miss Fire Island 2009 Renée Flaming, doing “Bring on the Men,” from “Jekyll and Hyde,” and Alexia Tate, who sang “Downtown,” with the audience singing along.
Porsche concluded the evening by taking us back to the 1960s, with Mama Cass’ mellow “California Dreaming” and “Make Your Own Kind of Music,” Grace Slick’s psychedelic “White Rabbit,” and Janis Joplin’s earthy version of “Summertime,” from “Porgy and Bess.”
