The first Ice Palace show of the new season, on May 7, was hosted by Ariel Sinclair, and featured some of the stars of the shows we can anticipate this season. DJ Manny Ojeda assisted.
After a complementary buffet of chicken fingers, mozzarella sticks, and miniature quiches from Island Breeze, Grove Hotel and Ice Palace General Manager Sal Piro introduced Ariel, who opened with a raunchy, transsexual parody of a “Wizard of Oz” song, as “If I Only Had a Snatch,” and later offered Wendy Ho’s no less risqué version of “That’s What Friends Are For,” as “That’s Why We Ain’t Friends.”
Lithe and energetic Dallas Dubois danced in a white feather cape and little else, averring “I’m alive;” delivered an intense “And I Am Telling You I Am Not Going,” from “Dreamgirls;” and, glitzy in silver, danced up a storm, declaring, “Absolutely not.”
Violet Storm, from the Bunkhouse, in Sayville, performed “Don’t Rain on My Parade,” from “Funny Girl” and, later, began with “Somewhere That’s Green,” from “Little Shop of Horrors,” segued into “Tomorrow,” from “Annie,” and ended with “Stranger in My House,” linking the songs with, ostensibly, phone calls from a stalker.
Singer Kenny Holcomb, frequent guest at Brandon Cutrell and Ray Fellman’s Monday night “Broadway at the Beach,” which will begin for the season on June 20, belted out “Big, Blonde, and Beautiful,” from “Hairspray,” customized as “Big, Bald, and Beautiful;” followed it with a moving “Once before I Go,” Peter Allen’s song; and ended with Donna Summer’s “Last Dance.”
Comic Scott Schendlinger, who has appeared at Ariel’s Thursday night “Kamikaze Kabaret,” did a stand-up routine about being hetero and Jewish in a gay environment. Miss Fire Island 2002 Ariel hosted an Ice Palace trivia contest between Miss FI 2009 Renée Flaming, who won, and glamorous reigning Miss FI Sabel Scities, who did a number (“We could have had it all”).
