Fire Island has certainly drawn its fair share of divas over the years, and Erika Jayne is the latest fabulous femme who hopes to wow the masses on this sandy strand.
Jayne, who has scored four consecutive number one hits on Billboard's Dance Club Play chart, will perform at the Ascension Tea Dance in Fire Island Pines on Saturday, Aug. 14. Her latest single, "Pretty Mess," from her debut album of the same name, pushed Lady Gaga, Usher, the Black Eyed Peas and Kelly Rowland off the top of the Hot Dance Club Play charts earlier this summer, but Jayne, who has never visited Fire Island, said she is excited to come to the beach.
"The boys of Fire Island like to have a good time, and I expect to be entertained myself," she said.
Born in Atlanta, Jayne cited Madonna, Prince and Michael Jackson as among her musical influences. Indeed, The Guardian, in the United Kingdom, once described her as "Madonna trapped in the moment when she recorded the 'Erotica' album" and "Nicole Kidman in 'Moulin Rouge' goes trance with a dash of debauchery, or Gwen Stefani goes burlesque."
Jayne also worked with Peter Rafelson, Eric Kupper and other producers and songwriters on her debut album. But what should the boys of Fire Island expect?
Jayne's Web site describes "Pretty Mess" as "if disco balls, ecstasy, pearls, Studio 54, sex, crystal chandeliers, Purple Rain, and Crème Brule could be whipped in a blender and made into a delicious pop-dance musical confection." She elaborated further.
"The song is fun and obviously my music is made to help you get up and dance and have a good time," added Jayne. "And that's what I hope the people on Fire Island will do this weekend."
