Qtalk, the queer talk show, which came to Fire Island for the first time last July and which some call a gay version of "The View," returned to the Ice Palace on July 18, for another engaging evening of discussion and compelling musical performances. Hosting Qtalk were Frantz G. Hall, Joseph John, Angie McKnight-a Fire Island virgin, who pays tribute to Cher, at Don't Tell Mama, on July 26-and guest host singer and Out Music Award Winner Terese Genecco, who performs regularly at Iridium, and plays Elvis at the Triad on July 24.
Our hosts bantered about the problem of transporting luggage through the Meat Rack, which Angie insisted on calling the Meat Market; Lindsay Lohan, the pre-jail and post-jail interviews; Liza Minnelli; the 75-year-old lesbian who hand-whistled on "America's Got Talent;" and favorite sex toys, for men and for women, which, billed as "The Qtalk Pleasure Chest," was the hot topic. With Terese declaring, "Your body is a playground" and Joe retorting, "Your body is a temple-open to everyone," the hosts presented a show-and-tell of favorite toys-cock ring; vaginal and anal stimulation balls; a Japanese plastic penis stimulator, the Tenga, no batteries required, but equipped with three kinds of lube; and vibrators-and then asked some audience members about our preferred toys.
With Jeff Cubeta at the piano, two singers offered at once dulcet and vibrant performances. Shaynee Fortunée Rainbolt, another FI virgin, who sings at the Sugar Bar, is of Sephardic Jewish and Viking descent, and won a MAC Award for her CD "Charmed Life," music of Russell García, sang "The Girls of Summer" and "I can't make you love me if you don't." T. Oliver Reed ("Sex in the City," "La Cage aux Folles"-first Broadway revival, and currently in "Mary Poppins") sang "Gimme, gimme that thing called love" and, in memory of his recently-departed best friend, "Over the Rainbow." T. Oliver showed off the tattoo on his back, a wingéd figure and the word 'Eternal,' and discussed the casts of "Mary Poppins" and "The Lion King's" upcoming sexual harassment seminar.
Catch Qtalk monthly at the Metropolitan Room, 34 West 22nd Street, in Manhattan-call 212/206-0440 for reservations-with the next edition due on July 24.
