The singing Glamazons, recently on television's "America's Got Talent," and a trio, rather than quartet, now that Ginger Snap, the redhead, left the group to marry, harmonized mellifluously on more than a dozen songs, at the Ice Palace on July 15, to the delight of the Cherry Grove audience. The remaining three, zaftig and proud, are head of the group Lady Finger, blonde Candy Apple, and Caramella. The Glamazons appeared here thanks to Daniel Nardicio.
Harmonizing mellifluously, the Glamazons insinuatingly invited "Come on in My House," seduced us with "Big Spender," from "Sweet Charity," and gave us "Fever." They took us back to the disco era with "Hot Stuff" and "It's Raining Men."
In her solos, Caramella urged, "Touch Me," from "The Rocky Horror Show;" insisted, "I'm beautiful, damn it;" and, in a pertinent adaptation, sang of looking for love in wrong places-Key West, for instance-in "Maybe This Time (maybe this one's not gay)."
Candy Apple celebrated the plus-sized woman with "Big, Blonde and Beautiful," from "Hairspray," and the plus-sized man, anticipating an encounter with a Texas, um, longhorn with trepidation, and telling herself, "Relax, now, Debbie, relax," in a song from "Debbie Does Dallas."
The trio's adaptation of "I'm a W-O-M-A-N" was about distinguishing themselves, glitzy dresses notwithstanding, from drag queens. They appealed to the sweet tooth with their new single "Sugar Rush," which they wrote, and got down and dirty with a bawdy selection about a "Sore/wet/hot/bald/free pussy (just a friendly little cat)." Their version of "Play that funky music, white boy" was a paean to the large woman-"Let me see you shake it, big girl"-and they reveled in the female anatomy with "You've got to have boobs," one couplet rhyming "alte kahkers" with "big knockers."
Glamazon's grand finale was a risqué rewriting of the hymn "Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee"-using the melody of the 'Ode to Joy,' from Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, but definitely not in the, say, Sandi Patty version-delivered as a gospel number, to a disco beat, and as a rap.
