Last September, Dave Hickey and PJ Jones, the dear men who present the popular Baña pool parties in New York City, gave Fire Island a sample of their endeavors with a sybaritic "Baña Belvedere: the Last Days of Pompeii," which was very much at home in the classic and ornate dream palazzo that is clothing optional Belvedere Guesthouse for Men, built by John Eberhardt in the 1950s and managed by Craig Eberhardt and Julian Darcelien. This July 9 to 11, Dave and PJ returned with an encore, a second divinely decadent extravaganza, billed as "Baña Belvedere: the Last Days of Pompeii 2," a benefit for the Cherry Grove Chamber of Commerce, which attracted scores of men from the Grove and Fire Island Pines, as well as from the city, especially for the event, and proved even bigger, better, and more exhilarating.

The festivities began with a friendly Friday night 'Meet 'n' Greet' poolside party, which introduced us to our gracious tranny MC, lovely, willowy Robi Martin, returning to New York from Denver after an extended absence, and the models-cum-dancers of rentboy.com, including breathtaking Gio, International Escort of the Year, from Venezuela; Rafael from Brazil; and familiar figures Corey Corey, the ebony god, and Shay, from Israel, strutting their stuff in bathing suits or less. The boys sizzled, the men were raring to go, colorful DJ Billy Beyond provided the music, and comely bartender Bryce, from Sydney, Australia, plied us with drinks, all of which effectively set the tone for the rest of the Baña party.

The centerpiece of the weekend was Saturday night's Vesuvias Erumpo, giving us a stylized view of the final days of Pompeii, before Mt. Vesuvius erupted and left it in ruins in 79 A.D. The rentboys enacted erotic scenes in Belvedere's lush, over-the-top living room and under the tent, on the stage flanked by a pair of huge shiny phalluses, on the bayside deck. With Pines DJ Lina taking charge of the music, and Robi as Mistress of Ceremonies, Shequida sang us her x-rated version of "Doncha (wish your girlfriend was hung like me)," as well as a bit of Puccini's "Un bel dì," from "Madama Butterfly." Don PV and his pair of pNp Dancers, covered in 'volcanic ash,' writhed graphically as Pompeii survivors, and bounced back to life to dance and rap-"Jump into My Pool (I will get you wet)." Bringing us back to reality, however, from this rarified realm, at about 1:53 a.m., or seven minutes before Vesuvias Erumpo was to end, was a visit from the authorities, in response to a neighbor's noise complaint, which put a stop to the music. Don't the community and its organizations expect there to be lively partying in the Grove on a Saturday night?
