Composer Stephen Sondheim turned 80 earlier this spring and has been fêted with numerous tributes this season. In this spirit, the Fire Island Pines Arts Project (FIPAP) recently announced that its Labor Day Weekend musical will be "Merrily We Roll Along" (1981), the Sondheim musical, which traces the lives of three estranged "old friends," beginning in the present, and tells their stories in reverse, showing, in successive flashbacks, how they reached that point after starting out as idealistic youths. "Merrily," which yielded such favorite songs as "Not a Day Goes By" and "Our Time," was not a success at its Broadway premiere, but has since been reexamined and embraced as one of Sondheim's cherished works. The FIPAP performances, guided by director Glen Wielgus and music director Charles Colby Sachs, will take place at the Brandon Fradd Theater, at the Whyte Hall Community Center on Fire Island Boulevard, on September 3 at 8 p.m. and 4th and 5th at 6 and 9 p.m. and ticket sale begin on August 21. To audition for FIPAP's "Merrily We Roll Along," which will be rehearsed for four weeks, call or email Steven Alan Black at 917/952-2385 or merrily@fipap.org. Auditions take place on June 26 from 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Equity and non-Equity performers are welcome.
The rest of FIPAP's season includes Broadway and television's Jane Krakowski in concert on June 12 at 9 p.m.; S.O.S. (Shopping on Saturday), featuring fashions by Calvin Klein,Ralph Lauren, Ron Chereskin, Diesel and Michael Kors, on June 19, from 10:30 a.m., for VIPs, or noon, general admission, to 3 p.m.; a surprise guest-to be announced on June 27-on July 30 at 9 p.m.; Grammy-award winning singer Matt Alber on August 7 at 9 p.m.; and the Fire Island Pines International Film Festival from September 10 to 12.
In an unprecedented collaboration, the Arts Project of Cherry Grove (APCG), which has for many years held a pair of casino nights as its major fundraiser of the season, and the Fire Island Pines Property Owners Association (FIPPOA) are joining forces to put on a nautical-themed "Fantasea" casino, during Pines Party weekend. Join your friends, from the Pines and the Grove, as mermaids and mermen, pirates, and undersea deities take over Whyte Hall, on July 31, from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m., and August 1, from 7 to 9 p.m.
Also due at Whyte Hall this summer are performances of a new, Downtown Urban Theater Festival 'Best Short' award-winning play by James Earl Hardy, "Confessions of a Homo Thug Porn Star," based on the life of adult film star and GayVN Hall of Fame inductee-turned-safe sex educator, AIDS researcher and gay rights activist Tiger Tyson. "Confessions" will be presented by Creative Ammo Inc., a decade-old nonprofit organization that assists LGBT playwrights, at Whyte Hall on August 13 at 8 and 10 p.m. Come to "Confessions" and see the Tyson character bare both body and soul to a reporter in a break during the making of a movie. James Earl Hardy is also the author of the popular B-Boy Blues series of African-American romance novels.
