On June 7, Cherry's on the Bay's first installment of "Dining with the Divas" for the season took place, this one hosted by Charity, and it was followed by Spicky Hilton's first show of her own at Cherry's.
"Dining with the Divas" is Cherry's twist on dinner theater. We enjoyed a scrumptious meal, prepared by Master Chef Nicole and company, of spicy cold gazpacho, served in cocktail glasses; pork loin (Joe's) and crab cakes (mine); and, for dessert, red velvet cake. While we were eating, hostess with the mostest Charity began her show, with a number of guest stars, and the assistance of DJ Dustin (Heaven). Charity's theme was men and the trouble they are and she began with a signature tune, "Big Spender," from-what else?-"Sweet Charity." Then she declared, in no uncertain terms, "As long as I'm paying the bills/I'm paying the cost of being the boss." She worked the room, reminding us that "I'm experienced," and it's true, she is, and then she gave us "Fever." "Why don't you do right," "You do something to me," "Hey, Daddy," "After the lights go down low" and, in tribute to Porsche, "Piece of my heart" were her other numbers in theme, but a departure was what she called her "lipstick lesbian song," "Candy."
Guest Renée Flaming offered expansive interpretations of "When you got it, flaunt it," from "The Producers," and "Everything's Coming Up Roses," from "Gypsy."
Dan Schlageter lent his supple baritone to "I can't help falling in love with you," his ornamentation of the chorus happily hearkening back to the 18th century aria antica "Plaisir d'amour," on which the Elvis song is partly based. Dan followed this with "The Summer Wind," one of his signature songs.
In her Cherry's debut, singer Tina Keys poured heart and voice into "We Belong," with young leatherguy Evan Cohen as backup. And singer Spicky Hilton previewed her show, set for later in the evening, by reminding "There's always gonna be another mountain."
With the assistance of DJ Manny, who had also been our server, Spicky wrapped her clear and throbbing tone around favorites by Mariah Carey ("Just call my name and I'll be there"), Beyoncé ("Halo"), and Celine Dion ("I could fall in love with you"), and concluded her first set with a very romantic "At Last."
Spicky's previous appearances at Cherry's had been as a guest of Jackie Dupree and she returned the favor by presenting Jackie as her guest and joining her for "American Boy" and "Get This Party Started." Jackie also lent her lush voice to "I Kissed a Girl, I Liked It," "Womanizer," rap "Jackilicious definition" ("so delicious"), "I just can't get you out of my head," "Private Dancer," and "Whatever Lola Wants," from "Damn Yankees," sung as "Whatever Jackie Wants."
"Dining with Divas" cont
inues with evenings hosted by singer Bianca Leigh (June 14), Spicky Hilton (June 21), and Electra (June 28), followed by shows by singer Epiphany (the 14th), Heaven (the 21st), and Jackie Dupree (June 28).
