At the climax of the spirited Cherry Grove Homecoming Queen Contest, as part of the "Under the Big Top" Arts Project of Cherry Grove (APCG) Membership Party, at the Community House on May 30, MCs Bella and Panzi declared it unanimous, with no runoffs necessary, that, by audience applause, Beach DeBree had been elected Homecoming Queen 2010. Beach will officiate at community events and ribbon-cutting ceremonies and will lead this summer's Grove Invasion of the Pines, on the Fourth of July, when she will be escorted by recently elected Mr. Fire Island Leather 2010, Rob Ferri. Beach was crowned by HQ 2009 Urban Sprawl and promptly dropped the crown, which her predecessor did, on the night she was crowned, as well.
Declaring jokingly, "I'm gonna miss the crown, but the shoes-no!" and seriously, to the membership, "This has been a most wonderful season and I thank you for that," Urban stepped down from her position, garbed as ringmistress, with a musical number, "Under a Big Top (that's where I wanna be)," replete with doubles entendres.
In a most interesting contest, Beach DeBree, a new member of the APCG Board of Directors, active in the Cherry Grove Garden Club, bested six other worthy candidates, who were: a veteran of the now defunct Island Repertory Theatre Company's productions-JoJo Gerard; a New York Emperor-Viking Queen Aida Herring, still determined to "rape and pillage in the Pines"-and Empress-Robin Kradles; a star participant in Leather Weekend's benefit Master and slave auction-Mary Ooofaaa; and two cast members, like Mr. FI Leather, of the Doctor's Fund Benefit shows-Shirley Shapiro and Ann Phetamine. One task MC Bella required of the contestants was that they sing "Happy Birthday," in the manner of Marilyn Monroe serenading President John F. Kennedy, an effort that quickly devolved into singing it as unlike MM as possible, and giving us, variously, an echt-Norse interpretation, a throaty Louis Armstrong imitation, and a lipsynch to Panzi's singing.
A playful highlight of the evening was APCG President Coco, a former HQ and former Miss Fire Island, playing lion tamer to life partner and former HQ Margo's friskily cavorting lion.
Congratulations, Beach DeBree-it's going to be quite a season!
