Pines & Grove Arts Projects Release New Details for Summer 2010

Near the end of April, the Fire Island Pines Arts Project (FIPAP) and the Arts Project of Cherry Grove (APCG) separately revealed new details of their schedules for the forthcoming summer season.

In an April 29 email, FIPAP disclosed that its season at Whyte Hall is set to get underway on June 12 at 9 p.m. with a performance by Broadway's Jane Krakowski. Save the date a week later for "S.O.S." (Shopping on Saturday) 2, on June 19 from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. A surprise guest is due at the community center on July 30 at 9 p.m., the start of Pines Party Weekend. Matt Alber is slated for an appearance on August 7 at 9 p.m.

Stay tuned to find out what Steven Alan Black has in store for us, as FIPAP follows up last season's magical production of Dan Goggins' "Nunsense A-Men!" with another Labor Day musical, to be announced, from September 3 to 5. The following weekend, from September 10 to 12., FIPAP sponsors the Fire Island Pines International Film Festival.

"Pines Chefs Cook" cooking classes are also on FIPAP's agenda, with dates, times, locations, and chefs to be announced.

On March 14, at its In-Town Party, at the LGBT Community Center in Manhattan, APCG gave members a foretaste of what the season at the Grove Community House would entail. An April 21 mailing to the membership contained fuller details of the summer schedule. The circus is in the air, as the theme of APCG's coming season will be "The Greatest Shows on Earth."

Save May 22 to 23 for the "Flea Circus" Flea Market, hosted by Joan Van Ness and Harold Seeley, as successor to Henry Sterling's popular Memorial Day Weekend charity deck sale by the ocean, which Henry will no longer hold, but he has turned sale items that remained over to APCG. The "Under the Big Top" membership party, featuring the fierce competition for Cherry Grove Homecoming Queen 2010, will take place on May 30.

There is a reception for VIP members, who purchase what is essentially a five-event subscription for $100, on June 5. Ocean Aires 12, "The Dirty Dozen," the classical concert coordinated by Isaac Steven Vaughn, is scheduled for June 12, and Penny Arcade is on hand to give a performance of her hard-hitting creation "Bitch!Dyke!Faghag!Whore!" on June 19.

In July, there are "Songs, Laughter & SURPRISES" in store, at the musical directed by John DeMarco, on the 3rd, the eve of the annual Independence Day Grove Invasion of the Pines. The riotous Doctor's Fund benefit show, conceived and directed by Donald Labohn, will concern "The Roaring 20s," on the 17th. The "Peep Show" Art Show is slated for the 24th and 25th.

Grove meets Pines in a new endeavor, when APCG and FIPPOA, the Fire Island Pines Property Owners Association, collaborate on Casino 2010, at Whyte Hall on July 31 and August 1, during Pines Party Weekend.

Back at the Community House, APCG hosts an evening with Broadway's Tommy Tune, inaugurating a series of "Conversations with an Artist," on August 7. The Cherry Grove Archives presents "Show People," a panel discussion, on the 21st, and an exhibition of archival treasures on that day and the following one. Save the 28th for "Cirque de SoGay," a new musical directed by Sherri Rase, SallyAnn Piacentino and Lee Sharmat.

During an action-packed Labor Day Weekend, come to the weekend-long "Families of Cherry Grove" photography exhibit; the "Family Day at the Circus" VIP members reception and "Hazelle Live!" described as "a night of outrageous comedy," with Hazelle Goodman, on September 4; and "Love Scenes," a one-man play, written by David Pumo, starring Moe Bertran, and directed by Donna Jean Fogel, on the 5th. Some may have seen "Love Scenes" when it was given at Cherry's last August 21. The climax of APCG's season will be the annual gala ball, billed this year as "Circus Side Show," on September 25.

APCG's Bingo season begins on July 11, with a "Beach Party" theme. "Fantasy Island," on the 18th; "Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader?" on the 25th; "Play It Again Sam" on August 1; "White Elephant" on the 8th; "Disneyland" on the 16th; "Happy Trails" on the 22nd; "and "Big Top on the 29th are themes for the other Bingo nights.

Sounds like we'll be having a very busy summer.
