On May 22, at the Ice Palace, Cherry Grove's own Rob Ferri took both the Mr. Fire Island Leather and Mr. Meatrack titles at the 10th annual Mr. FI Leather contest, the centerpiece of Leather Weekend, which precedes Memorial Day Weekend. It was also the weekend of New York City's Excelsior Motorcycle Club's 35th anniversary Lust for Life run, which, with a circus/S&M theme, was billed as "Under a Big Top."
Entertainer Ariel Sinclair and Mr. FI Leather 2008 Isaac Steven Vaughan, the creator of the contest, hosted the Saturday evening event and Chuck McTaigue served as DJ.
Decked out in black leather vest, chaps and jock, Rob, who performs in the annual Grove Doctor's Fund Benefit show, which helps ensure the presence of a physician in the community, and who has also hosted dungeon nights at the Tides, responded to the MCs' questions about his dragon tattoos and about water sports, and later enacted a hot fantasy scene, with Evan Cohen, from Jumping Jack's Seafood Shack, as his willing bottom, making liberal use of sling, floor, beer, and baby oil. Rob impressed a panel of four judges, made up of Excelsior President Victor Skolnik, custom leatherwear designer David Samuel Menkes, and Messrs. FI Leather 2007 Diego Vargas and 2001, the first-ever, this writer, to earn the Mr. FI title, a sash fashioned by Menkes, $200 cash, and brunch for two at Maracas. As audience favorite, he was declared Mr. Meatrack as well, winning an additional $100.
Rob beat out contenders Excelsior Treasurer Jerry McCormick, who portrayed a firefighter, extinguishing a fire in the Meatrack, before continuing with a scene there with two men and sling; NEPA (Northeast Pennsylvania) Leathermen Pledge Master David, who described singling out one man, from a roomful of men, to take back to his room; and Todd, whose narrative rambled from Penn Station to Fire Island to shopping to being taken to a police officer's dungeon.

During the evening, Ariel performed signature song "My Vagina Is Eight Miles Wide;" yours truly sang "Impossible Dream," from "Man of LaMancha;" Ariel and comic Brad Loekle administered birthday spanks to 30-year-old Kent; and Victor Skolnick announced that the previous evening's benefit Master and slave auction, hosted by singer Porsche and John Doyle, raised $645 for a Grove charity to be determined.
Auctioned off that night were flogger TC, from Baltimore; Ken Woodhouse; couple Ray and Brian; Long Island Biker Bear Mike; Pup Tripp, from Washington D.C., won by Excelsior's Tony; Ooofaaa, won by Joanne Wadsworth, of Pennsmen M.C., for the highest bid of the auction; Mikey, from Cherry Grove Pizza; and Chris, looking exceptionally good in his harness.
More than 90 leatherfolk were registered for the Excelsior run, including guests from Twilight Guard, the GDIs (God Damned Independents), Spearhead Toronto, Shipmates Club of Baltimore, Harbor Masters of Maine, Pennsmen M.C., Long Island Ravens, Philadelphians M.C., and Bad Companions, who attended events, not only at the Ice Palace, but also at Belvedere Guest House for Men, and restaurants Floyd's and Island Breeze. Next year's Excelsior run is scheduled for May 20 to 22 at the Belvedere.
