APCG Holds In-Town Reunion & Announces Highlights of Summer Schedule, Featuring 'Greatest Show on Earth' Theme

On the afternoon of March 14, the Arts Project of Cherry Grove (APCG) held its annual In-Town Party at, as last year, New York City's LGBT Community Center. APCG currently boasts 142 members, according to Martha Pitkin, and many were in attendance to enjoy a brunch, catered by Joe Babbington and Friends, and hear the theme of the coming summer's events, "The Greatest Show on Earth," which was reflected in the decoration of the third floor auditorium and circus accoutrements sported by APCG officers and board members.

Some highlights of the early part of the season include the 12th annual Ocean Aires, "The Dirty Dozen," coordinated by Isaac Steven Vaughan, on June 12; Penny Arcade in her show "Bitch!Dyke!Faghag!Whore!" on June 19; and "Songs, Laughter & Surprises," directed by John DeMarco, on July 3.

In August, we will enjoy an evening with Broadway'-and Fire Island Pines'-Tommy Tune, billed as a 'conversation with an artist,' on the 7th; a Cherry Grove Archives panel discussion on the subject of "Show People," on the 21st; and "Cirque de SoGay," directed by Sherri Rase, SallyAnn Piacentino, and Lee Sharmat, and looking at the Grove before the great hurricane of September 21, 1938.

September will bring "Hazelle Live!" described as a night of outrageous comedy," on the 4th; David Pumo's play "Love Scenes," with Moe Bertran, which was given as a benefit for the Grove Doctor's Fund, at Cherry's, last August 21, and reaches the Community House this September 5; and the annual end-of-season gala ball, with a theme of "Circus Side Show," on September 25.

One hot topic of discussion at the gathering, the subject of a recent email from APCG President Michael Coffindaffer, was the APCG board's proposal to join forces with the Fire Island Pines Property Owners Association (FIPPOA) and present the annual Casino at Whyte Hall, the Pines Community Center, instead of at the Grove Community House, during Pines Party weekend, at the end of July. Casino volunteers and other APCG members should be weighing in shortly with strong opinions concerning this idea.
