Electra as Bette Midler

On Labor Day, September 7, Cherry Grove and Cherry's warmly welcomed Electra, erstwhile entertainment coordinator of the Ice Palace and Miss Fire Island MC, and Bette Midler impressionist extraordinaire, back after several seasons' absence. With Heaven serving as DJ, Electra gave us a full evening of Midler, and changed shoes, wig and wardrobe on stage several times during the show.
Set to run, later in the week, for Ms. Fire Island, and still a bundle of energy, Electra began with "The showgirl must go on" and "Big noise from Winetka." Still as Midler, she gave us some smoldering Peggy Lee-"Fever," "'Cause I'm a W-O-M-A-N"-and Rosemary Clooney, the sentimental-"You'll never know"-and the insinuating-"C'mon in my house." Then "Hey, there," from "Pajama Game," "In the cool of the evening," "Friends," and "No me gusta caminar" ("In these shoes?")
After the glitz, Electra put on her Midler motley and reached back to Bette's Continental Baths days for a languid "Do you want to dance?" and touching "Hello in there." Her energetic "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" and "In the Mood" followed, and she concluded with Midler's later "Wind Beneath My Wings" and "Glory of Love."
Electra performs at Cherry's again on September 11.
