The Arts Project of Cherry Grove (APCG) brought its season of celebrating Hollywood to a close with a dazzling "Night at the Oscars" ball, at the Ice Palace on September 26. Guests were encouraged to wear costumes inspired by movies, or finery they might wear to the Academy Awards ceremony, to accept their Oscars. DJ Chuck McTague was responsible for music, much of it from films, and SHK Catering Service, for hors d'oeuvres, a scrumptious dinner, and dessert, complete with a chocolate fountain for dipping cookies, marshmallows, and so on.
Bella served as MC for the festive event, which, nevertheless, marks the ending of Fire Island summer season 2009, and opened by saying, aptly, "This is one of my favorite evenings. It's sad, but its one of my favorite evenings," and hailed attendees by declaring, "Altogether, we are the best Fellini movie in the world."
APCG President Coco Love thanked Harold Seeley for his setting for the ball, involving a chandelier, a box office, and classic scenes of Hollywood and of antiquity. Coco also announced the winners of this year's star-shaped community service awards, who were John "Marianne Hoffa" Piazza (in absentia); Wendy Lewis, who said, in accepting hers, "There's nowhere I'd like to be in the world" other than Cherry Grove; and Bella, who was truly surprised and confessed, "I'm farklempt."
Providing entertainment were Homecoming Queen Urban Sprawl, as Baby Jane Hudson, urging, "Keep young and beautiful;" Robin Kradles, vamping us with Christine Aguilera's "Naughty, nasty boy;" Dale Lally, hoofing it in "All I need is the girl," from "Gypsy," and "the girl" turned out to be Tony Bondi on roller skates; and Pinky and the Blenders, doing "Pink."
Sylvia and Shirley Shapiro and Ruth and Susan Freedner were judges for a riotous costume contest and winners, of $200 cash and an "Oscar" trophy apiece were, for most debonair, Lee Sharmat as Zorro; for most glamorous, Lola Galore as Norma Shearer as Marie Antoinette; and for best Hollywood portrayal, Dr. Patrick Frattelone as Esther Williams.
Other contestants in the debonair category included Carl Luss as "Cheetah's wrangler;" SallyAnn Piacentino; Steve Menendez as Charlton Heston; "Big Daddy," a Colonel Sanders look alike; Sherri Rase as a French detective; Charles Young; and Marge Cozzolino. Robin Kradles; Jerena, as Grace Kelly's baby sister; Bella as Sophia Loren; China; Amy Rosen; Jo Jo Gerard; Ann Phetamine; Joyce Rodgers; and Taffeta were among the others competing for most glamorous. Trying out for best Hollywood portrayal were Victor Alfieri, as "Toy Story I" and "II;" Jack Ruolo as Tom Cruise in "Risky Business;" Dr. Rick Byrd and Brian as Laurel and Hardy; Lois Pisano, Joann Tavis, Doreen Rallo and Bobbi Green as "The Wizard of Oz"'s Dorothy, the Tin Woodsman, the Scarecrow and the Cowardly Lion; Harold as Mickey Mouse; Gary Greene as the casting couch; and Shannon as Marilyn Monroe.
