On a sunny, sweltering August 5, Cherry Grove's Grovettes bested the Suffolk County Police Copettes in the annual Cherry Bowl volleyball tournament once again. The teams played two 21-point games and a 15-point game. In the first game, the Grovettes, captained by Sue Panzer and coached by Andi Porzio, beat the Copettes 21 to 14. In Game 2, the Copettes won, 15 to 9, and in the deciding game, the Grovettes handily clinched their victory.
Sal Piro called the games. Doreen Rallo was the referee. Cherry Queen Jason Cozmo threw out the first ball. With the assistance of DJ Chuck, Brandon Cutrell sang the "Star Spangled Banner," before the games, and Porsche and the Cherry Tarts, the cheerleaders, led by Ariel Sinclair, and chanting, "We're hot, we're hot, we're really fucking hot," entertained between the first and second game and relieved most of the Copettes of their shirts. Johnny, a muscular, tattooed New York City police officer in a brief rainbow bathing suit, there to cheer on his Suffolk County colleagues, caught the eyes of the Queen, the Tarts, and many of the rest of us, and posed for photos.
There was one woman, Carolyn, on the Copettes team, and one as well, Amy, in the Suffolk County Emerald Society Pipes and Drums, which played in the pre-games parade, between the first and second game, and afterwards, poolside, at the victory party at the Grove Hotel/Ice Palace, where they played "Amazing Grace" in memory of Amelia Migliaccio, late 'Not So Grand Marshal' and organizer of the parades. In the kickoff parade, Paul Jablonski, Martha Lorenzo, Dr. Patrick Fratellone, and I served as flag bearers.
