On August 5, at the Ice Palace, Daniel Nardicio and Jonjon Battles instigated a night of country music quite unlike any other, billed as "She Haw."
After Violet Temper kicked off the proceedings with a monologue from "Designing Women," Our Lady J, at the piano, led a sing-along of a charming song about basic training-"1-2-3-4 trained to kill/1-2-3-4 kill we will/Who built the motherfuckers?/We built the motherfuckers/We'll tear the motherfuckers down!" She also shared her favorite Dolly Parton song, lovingly limning a land where "the sky is green and the grass is blue."
Bridget Everett favored us with a Kenny Rogers-Sheena Easton love song-"We've got tonight"-and brought this writer to the stage to dance with her. She also sang a song by Miley Cyrus, whom she called "a real American hero"-"There's always gonna be another mountain."
With Our Lady J at the piano, Justin Bond, in West Virginia hills persona, offered redneck jokes and sang, "Take me home, country road." Justin's other selections were an x-rated number-"You got to shave 'em dry"-and an original song from new recording "Pink Slip," sketching out a plan for the "new economy" in "the new Depression"-"Bring on a high-heeled tranny/bring on fantasy."
