Fire Island Dance Festival (DRA) ........................................................................................................................................................................................
Cheeky shower scenes, a British punk-inspired sequence and a classic portrayal of the Black Swan were among the more than a dozen performances that wowed audiences at the 15th annual Fire Island Dance Festival on July 18-19 in the Fire Island Pines.
Twelve-year-old Kamilah Shah made her FIDF debut, while choreographers Jodi Melnick and Zvi Gotheiner were among those who showcased a variety of dance genres under the comical eyes (and lips and overly sexual innuendos) of Emmy-nominated emcee Bruce Vilanch.
In the Feliciano Dance Company’s American premiere of “Workin’ for Peanuts,” for example, seven dancers who posed as straphangers paid tribute to the late-King of Pop as they headed from 96th to 110th Streets on an uptown 2 train. They evoked the teenagers who hock peanut M&Ms with the overly cliché “This is not for no basketball team. I’m trying to make some money to stay out of trouble.” And one Feliciano dancer even vogued to 80s icon Shannon.
Angel Feliciano choreographed “Workin’ for Peanuts.” He began to dance hip hop at age seven. And he told the News following his company’s performance he feels the piece reflects the variety of genres from which he has taken inspiration. Fellow dancer Jason Santana added the black gloves were indeed no coincidence.
Founded by former dancers Hernando Cortez and Denise Roberts Hurlin in 1995, the FIDF has raised more than $2 million for Dancers Responding to AIDS. This year’s festival raised roughly $250,000 for the New York-based organization. And those who participated remain adamant Fire Island remains one of the world’s most beautiful venues in which they perform.
“The people are so magical,” Mary Carmen Catoya of the Miami City Ballet said after she and Rolando Sarabia performed the Black Swan.
Alexander Gish of Keigwin + Company agreed. “[The crowd] is much more intimate,” he said. “We were really getting to know people.”
Vilanch failed to perform his own dance number—or even don a tutu—as he coyly suggested he may to the News in an earlier interview. He did poke fun at the transitioning Chaz Bono, legendary Italian actress Sophia Loren (and her various plastic surgeries) and even an eavesdropping kayaker in the bay. But the dancers remained center stage. "There wasn’t a clunker in the crowd," Vilanch said. “It was smart and clever.”
