CGCAI Salutes 4 at Community Honors Event; Assembly's Fields Presents Citations

The Cherry Grove Community Association, Inc. (CGCAI) held its fourth annual Community Honors Awards event, on August 15, at Heaven 'n' Earth, the home of CGCAI President Diane Romano and partner Patricia Goff, and David Bullock, Thom "Panzi" Hansen, and Doreen Rallo and Bobbie Green were the awards recipients.
CGCAI Vice-President Joyce Yaeger praised David's "dedication, his charm, his wry sense of humor [and] his commitment to the community" and cited his having "guided the Community House Improvement Committee," responsible for adding soundproofing and air conditioning to the Community House. Presenting David with his award, Joyce also noted his work staffing the box office; his having brought home from Barcelona elaborate Spanish señorita costumes, for himself and partner Tim Webster to wear for the Invasion of the Pines, as Doña Ask and Doña Tell; and his heroic battle against illness.
Philip "Philomena" Stoehr and Matt Baney saluted Panzi as a founder of the Christopher Street Liberation Day Committee, forerunner of Heritage of Pride in organizing New York City's Pride March; health organization Community Research Initiative; and the Invasion, saying that "what began as an act of civil disobedience" has become "a one-man economic stimulus package for both communities," Cherry Grove and Fire Island Pines. Panzi was also the Grove's first Homecoming Queen and a member of the Fire Department and has been in more Grove shows than anyone else in the community, with the possible exception of Rose Levine. Panzi said, "Just about everyone at this party is deserving of this award," and confessed, "I am so touched by it."
Diane introduced Doreen and Bobbie, praising them for "not complaining ever-they always see the glass as half full," and noted their work at the Arts Project of Cherry Grove Casino; their performances in the Doctor's Fund Benefit show; and their membership in the volunteer Fire Department. Doreen thanked the community for "the freedom to be who we are and to share Cherry Grove with our friends and families."
New York State Assemblywoman Ginny Fields brought official citations for the four honorees, lauding them "not only for all that you have done, but all you will continue to do." She also urged those present to "un-elect every [NYS] Senator," because, if not for the Senate's internal squabbles, "we could have had gay marriage this year."
