Under the auspices of Daniel Nardicio and the Ice Palace, World Famous Bob, ecdysiast par excellence and self-described female female impersonator, offered a sneak preview of her autobiographical "One Man Show," or as she put it, "the story of a girl who had to become a drag queen to become a woman," on August 26, and kept us spellbound as her tale unfolded. The official premiere of Bob's "One Man Show" will take place on September 10 at Joe's Pub, 425 Lafayette Street, in the Village.
Bob took us on a wild journey from the farm, in California, to West Hollywood to San Francisco to New York, and explained the early discovery of her affinity for her gay male friends-"You realize you're not alone"-and her identification with performing drag queens and trannies, her "role models," and her work alongside them, as one of them, before she became a "burlesque revivalist."
Bob, of course, provided visuals as well, because a "girl can't help it"-her big-haired, over-the-top Jayne Mansfield/Marilyn Monroe/Charo look, with bright red gown by David Quinn; a slide show depicting the life stages she detailed; and a striptease down to signature glittery red bikini, then to pasties and tassels. But the narrative, clearly and honestly delivered, was the point.
Over the years, Bob has shared fragments of her tale during her appearances at the Ice Palace and the Tides, but here, her goal was to present a coherent account of a unique life, filled with ups and downs, with triumphs and tribulations, and she kept it consistently fascinating.
