The Concerned Women of the Grove (CWOG) held their lavish 14th annual benefit for a most worthy cause, the fight against breast cancer, on the sunny afternoon of August 1, on the beautiful and spacious grounds of Heaven 'n' Earth, home of Diane Romano and Patricia Goff, at Two Bayview Walk.
Representatives from beneficiaries Gilda's Club NYC, which will honor CWOG at its own gala in November, and the Stony Brook Center for Breast Cancer Research spoke about their organizations' work. Young Korissa Falco, niece of CWOG's Michael Falcone and Paul Scarpa, kayaked across Great South Bay, from Long Island to Fire Island, in one hour and 20 minutes, to raise money for CWOG and presented the organization with a check for $2,000.
There was a silent auction of gift baskets; tickets for theater, music, and sports events; gift certificates for restaurants in the Grove, on Long Island, and in New York City; framed paintings, photos and posters; jewelry; books; k.d. lang's CD "Watershed," autographed by the singer-songwriter; a baseball signed by Phil Rizzuto; and a "Blithe Spirit" poster, autographed by Angela Lansbury, Christine Ebersole, and other cast members.
Donna Piranha, a vision in pink and black, with ruffled bottom, served as MC for a show at which she offered numbers "She's back," "Sway with Me," and after a change of garb, "I kissed a girl, I liked it" and "(What have you done today to make you) Proud." She also called all the CWOG volunteers to the stage for a bow.
Homecoming Queen Urban Sprawl shared a story about her friend Bridget, diagnosed with breast cancer six years ago and a survivor, still going strong. Demi-Tasse, as Barbra Streisand, performed Malby and Shire's "Starting Here, Starting Now," and Bella's song was "I Got Love," from the musical "Purlie."
Singer Shirley Ritenour was on hand to sell copies of her debut CD, "Both Sides Now," 20% of the cost of which she donated to Gilda's Club NYC through CWOG.
Mella Yodice, presiding in the kitchen, saw to it that hot and cold hors d'oeuvres were forthcoming throughout the afternoon.
