The season's third Broadway at the Beach, at the Ice Palace on July 6, hosted by singer Brandon Cutrell and pianist Ray Fellman, featured a number of illustrious guest artists.
Brandon and Ray got us in the mood for the night of music-and mayhem-with a rousing pairing of "Tonight's the Night" and "Let's Misbehave," and later offered a carefree "One Hand in My Pocket." Kenny Holcomb gave us a rather introspective, jazzy "On the Street Where You Live," and he and Brandon, harmonizing in duets, saluted each other ("Because of you") and portrayed rivals ("Does he love you like he loves me?")
Todd Adamson ("Army Wives"), a Fire Island virgin, introduced himself with a stirring "Feeling Good," with a highly ornamented vocal line and an apt piano interlude from Ray, and related an ardent "Make Them Hear You," the anthem from "Ragtime," to the fight for marriage equality.
Making a welcome return to Broadway at the Beach, Devin Richards ("Tale of Two Cities," "Finian's Rainbow"), dedicated "Bedda [Better] at Home," sung with heart, verve and resonance, to his partner, who was present.
Susan Campanaro, in her tipsy, over-the-top "Lavinia Draper, Broadway understudy to the stars" persona, rampaged through "Tomorrow," "Big Spender," "All that Jazz," "Maybe this Time," "Mein Herr," and "Cry Me a River."
Michael Longoria ("Jersey Boys") showed off an amazing high head voice, bidding "Goodbye, Yellow Brick Road."
John De Marco repeated his dulcet "This Time Around," which he sang in his recent Arts Project of Cherry Grove show, "Hollywood Bound."
Rose E. of Floyd's reminded us that she's a "Broadway Baby," in addition to a pastry chef, crafting scrumptious confections.
Chuck Prentice let us know that, "You're addicted to crystal and I'm addicted to you" ("I get high on you"). He had also favored us with this number at the opening night of Broadway at the Beach last season.
Miss Grove Hotel 2009 Dallas Dubois probed the plight of being an understudy and Miss Invasion 2009 Logan Hardcore mixed together "Dance Ten, Looks Three," I Just Wanna Dance," "Popular" and lines from "Mommie Dearest." Sal Piro conducted a Broadway trivia/puzzle contest in which the audience fared better than the contestants.
