There's a well-known quotation that you only need three things to sing opera: voice, voice and more voice. Well, that and more could easily apply to chanteuse Bianca Leigh as well, as she proved anew when she sang at Cherry's on July 10, with Heaven as DJ, and offered singing with consummate feeling, honest delivery, silvery tone, and effortlessly sustained climactic notes.
Bianca gave us some Dusty Springfield ("Wishin', Hopin'," "Son of a Preacher Man"), Cyndi Lauper ("True Colors," which Bianca called her Gay Pride song), Connie Francis ("Where the Boys Are"), Tammy Wynette ("Stand By Your Man"), and Nat King Cole ("Unforgettable"). She drew on music theater repertory, with "Mack the Knife," from "The Threepenny Opera;" "There's no man left for me," from "Will Rogers' Follies," which she dedicated to Victoria Weston, whom she had first heard sing it; the title song from "On a Clear Day You Can See Forever;" and, as a dramatic Norma Desmond, "With One Look," from "Sunset Boulevard;" and on film, with "Miss Celie's Blues," from "The Color Purple," and "Moon River," from "Breakfast at Tiffany's."
