Cherry Grove welcomed our own dear Bella back to the Ice Palace stage, on July 12, for the first time since her emergency surgery earlier in the season. Chuck served as DJ.
Bella's risqué opening number was "Push the Button," from the Broadway musical "The Color Purple," after which she talked about: her surgery and recovery; the mother raccoon that took over her deck several seasons ago; her friends and tenants Ruth and Susan Freedner and her former tenant Ivanna Cocktail, whom she got to meow; and an encounter with bats on Bayview Walk.
Demi-Tasse was on hand to share that "My baby takes the morning train" and, as Barbra Streisand, a medley of a number from "The Fantasticks" ("I can feel it"), "Happy Days Are Here Again," and a dramatic conclusion ("Wasn't leaving me the best thing you've ever done?")
Phil Craig, returning to the Grove after a 20-year absence, offered a breathtaking Liza Minnelli, doing "Old Friends," from Stephen Sondheim's "Merrily We Roll Along;" Sophie Tucker favorite "I'm living alone and I like it;" "The World Goes 'Round;" and, adding a top hat to her glitzy garb, "Come to the Cabaret," with which she brought down the house.
Lovely Nikki Starr was Cher ("The Way of Love") and, after introducing local beauties Coco, Margo, Lola, and Charity, her colleagues in the Doctor's Fund Benefit Show, "Hooray for Hollywood!" on July 18, as well as Renée Flaming and, visiting from Paris, Fifi, Bella closed by explaining how to manage a "Marriage, Jewish Style," with "a shiksa on the side."
Bella performs at the Concerned Women of the Grove Breast Cancer benefit on August 1, at Heaven 'n' Earth, and at the next Bella Show, at the Ice Palace, on August 2.
