June 9, 2009 - Last summer, Fire Island Pines' Robert Bonanno shared his "Lessons from the Beach: Reflections from Fire Island" in a short, sensitive 8-1/2-by-11 paperbound volume, published by Lulu, of his fine photos of the island's Nature and communities, accompanied by some of his thoughts that the island and the images have inspired.
This summer, a second, similar volume, "Reflections of Love from Fire Island: Lessons from the Beach Continue," joins the first and Robert refers to it as "a big greeting card to anyone you love in this year of celebration of the summer of love."
You'll find here Robert's photos of the beach, the ocean, the seashells, the boardwalk, the houses, the foliage, the dunes, the sunsets, and the ferry. Readers from Cherry Grove will recognize the oversized chair at the Ice Palace, introduced at one of the carnivals the establishment used to hold, and the gleaming white towers of Belvedere. Those from the Pines will see pink and purple lights from the Pavilion reflected on the waters of the bay in the harbor at night.
Once again, few photos focus on the people of Fire Island-there are three of men, seen from the back or in silhouette, on the beach, contemplating the ocean, and one of two men in bathing suits on the boards-for, as Robert said when I interviewed him last season, "I tried to keep people anonymous, because Fire Island is a place where people come to get away from everyday life and I try to respect people's privacy."
Accompanying the photos, which are quite wonderful, are not only Robert's brief observations connected with each one, but also a page in which he looks at the nature of love, in his own words and in ones borrowed from the Book of Corinthians, and a capsule history of Fire Island and description of each community. Don't put this last under too fine a microscope-Ocean Beach and the Pines can't both be Fire Island's largest town and, as for Cherry Grove's "30 houses," well, try 280, by the Cherry Grove Property Owners Association's estimate-but these cavils can scarcely mar this well-intentioned effort and the well-being it conveys.
