Into the Pines Kitchen contains 200 recipes from 100 contributors, including Pines notables Scott Bromley, Gilbert Parker, and Hal Rubinstein. As a nod to bygone days, the book also features a posthumous contribution from John Whyte, one of the Pines' founders. The book includes original photography of the island from Pines artists William Karam, Mark Lonsbury, and Barbara Sahlman. •More About this Book»

Cherry Grove celebrated LGBT Pride on June 27 with an 11th annual Pride Parade, around downtown Cherry Grove, and with "United!"-saluting the six American states, and Canada, which have made same-sex marriage legal-as the theme. The event also marked the 40th anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall Rebellion, in Greenwich Village, considered the start of the 20th century Gay Liberation Movement.
Organizers of the Grove parade were Denise "Dell" Harbin, publisher of the Violet Letter; Paul Jablonski, one of the founders of the Grove parade in 1999; and this writer, Mr. Fire Island Leather 2001, the first ever. Pillars of the community nonagenarian Glen Boles and mate "Mathilde von Sluttenberg" (Roland), wearing sashes identifying them as Mr. and Mrs. Gay Pride, rode one of the CG volunteer Fire Department vehicle, driven by Bobbi Green. Fire Chief Jill Nevarra drove another. Homecoming Queen Urban Sprawl led an Arts Project of Cherry Grove contingent that included organization President Michael Coffindaffer, Laura Spadafino, Martha Pitkin and Ellen Biggers, James, Jane Haber and Mel Rock. Flag bearer Sherri Rase and, as the Statue of Liberty, Fran Reinhardt led the parade. On the Cherry Grove Community Association, Inc.'s float were President Diane Romano, Joyce Yaeger, Audrey Hartmann, Toni Cesta, and Don Robb. Carrying the flags of the locales that have legalized gay/lesbian marriage were Fire Island News managing editor Mike Lavers (New Hampshire), J.P. Michaud (Maine), Sam (Vermont), CG Airlines' Richard Reilly and Jim Crapotta (Connecticut), Belvedere's Candido (Massachusetts), Brian and Ray (Iowa), and Pat Goff (Canada). Dale, and later DJ Joey, optimistically carried the Stars and Rainbow Stripes. Jan Felshin and Edrie Ferdun, who were married in California, carried the California flag and marched with other gay and lesbian married couples.
The rainbow lesbian Gay Bouquet contingent, consisting of SallyAnn Piacentino, Denise, FI News columnist Linda Dickerman and Barbara Hirsch, Pat Wagnis and Lyn Belensky, and Lynne Tunderman, wore black ribbons in memory of Amelia Migliaccio, another founder of the Grove parade and of this contingent. Joe Saporito, Mr. FI Leather 2005, and yours truly, Philip Otten, and Dawn made up the Leather contingent. Sybil Bruncheon and Harold Seeley carried a "Camp Fire Island: Gay Youth Corps" banner. The amazing Ann Phetamine must be mentioned. The colorful Cherry Grove Garden Club, including Troy Files and Brian Clark, carried their organization's lavender banner, and Robert Conlon drove his decorated cart.
Businesses Grove Hotel/Ice Palace, Dune Point, with a leather/fetish theme, the Tides, Jumping Jack's Seafood Shack, Cherry Grove Pizza, Cherry's, with a 'white trash' theme, and Island Breeze were represented. Columnist Bob "Rose" Levine, photographer Lorraine Michels, and writer Ed Mallon were there on behalf of the Fire Island Tide. Photographer Koitz was also present.
