Singer Jackie Dupree, who caused a sensation with her Fire Island debut, at Cherry's on June 9, returned there on the last day of June, with another singer, her Latina "drag daughter," Spickie [sic] Hilton, making her own local debut, in tow, and Dupree and Hilton never stopped dazzling us, both individually and together in duet. Manny was the DJ and local favorite, Ann Phetamine, put in a guest appearance.
Jackie began by duetting with herself-that is, with alter ego James-taking both parts as she invited, "Come on, Barbie, let's go party," before showing us her command, once again, of the likes of "Killing Me Softly" and "Get This Party Started," as well as some Lil' Kim and a tribute to Michael Jackson.
Our introduction to Spickie came as the singers branded a seducer as a "Beautiful Liar" in their intense Beyoncé-and-Shakira duet. For her solos, Hilton bade us to "Come to the Cabaret" and poured out her heart in a Miley Cyrus number. As much as Jackie and Spickie impressed with their earlier selections, it was their grand finale that indelibly marked the evening as a special musical occasion, as they traded tongue-twisting observations about making the "Impossible" quite possible, portraying Rodgers and Hammerstein's fairy godmother and goddaughter in a delicious take on the duet from "Cinderella."
Catch Jackie Dupree when she returns to Cherry's, later in the summer, and this Friday, when she makes her Pines debut at the Blue Whale.
