Into the Pines Kitchen contains 200 recipes from 100 contributors, including Pines notables Scott Bromley, Gilbert Parker, and Hal Rubinstein. As a nod to bygone days, the book also features a posthumous contribution from John Whyte, one of the Pines' founders. The book includes original photography of the island from Pines artists William Karam, Mark Lonsbury, and Barbara Sahlman.

Susan Willis, Broadway, television and film actress, who was a founder of the Fire Island Pines Arts Project more than 25 years ago, passed away at the Village Nursing Home in Greenwich Village on May 14 at the age of 83.
She was born in Ohio and lived on Charles Street, in the Village, and in the Pines. She took part in a number of FIPAP productions, including the 2007 "Best Little Whorehouse in Texas," which was reviewed in these pages and in which she played Wulla Jean, who leaves the Chicken Ranch to Mona Stangley. (The part was played on Broadway by Edna Milton, the real-life model for the character of Mona.)
A statement from FIPAP on May 15 hailed Susan Willis for having "enthusiastically served and supported our organization dedicated to the community's cultural vitality" and announced that donations in her name would be accepted by Fire Island Pines Arts Project c/o Laura Hartstein, 135 West 70th Street #8B, New York NY 10023. |
