On May 16, at the ninth annual Mr. Fire Island Leather contest, in the Ice Palace at the Grove Hotel, Steve Rodgriguez, from the Pines impressed a panel of six judges and beat out four other contestants for the title of Mr. FI Leather 2009. Steve, an accountant, hails from Darien, Connecticut and came to Cherry Grove, for Excelsior Motorcycle Club's 34th anniversary "Lust for Life: Lockup" leather weekend, at the Belvedere Guest House for Men, with comrades from Connecticut club Twilight Guard. His prizes, beside the title, were a sash, made by custom leatherwear designer David Samuel Menkes, and $300 cash. He also decided which local charity would receive the $310 raised in Excelsior's sale of 50-50 raffles that night and his choice was the Grove Doctor's Fund.
Young bartender Stevie Rich, of the Monster in Greenwich Village, was the audience favorite, winning the runner-up title of Mr. Meat Rack 2009 and $150 cash.
Sal Piro and John Doyle produced and coordinated the contest. Entertainer Ariel Sinclair was Mistress of Ceremonies. DJ Chuck provided the music.
Christopher Street, a family doctor and FI virgin, who came to leather weekend with friends from Portland, Maine club Harbor Masters; Eli, a physical therapist, who lives near the Belvedere; and Candido, an architect and construction manager, originally from Massachusetts and working at Belvedere, were the other contenders for the Mr. FI Leather title.
Messrs. FI Leather 2008 Isaac Steven Vaughan, original creator of the contest; 2007 Diego Vargas; 2005 Joe Saporito; and 2001, the first-ever, this writer; David Samuel Menkes; and Quinn Matthews, Mr. Gay USA Cub Unlimited 2008-2009, were the judges. As Isaac gave up his title, he and Ariel did shtick-the way they had as hosts for the first seven contests-about his fantastic winning fantasy scene last year. Ariel offered a bawdy country/western number, "Were you born an asshole/or did you work at it your whole life?" and used the onstage sling as a swing. Energetic young Madonna Manson did Rihanna number "Disturbia" and, as alter ego Baby Powder, interspersed Whitney Houston's "I'm Every Woman" with dramatic dialogue, some of which seemed to come from "Sordid Lives." On a different note, this bass-baritone proffered a classical music interlude, singing the Bach-Gounod "Ave Maria."
The previous evening, singer Porsche and John Doyle hosted a lively benefit Master and Slave Auction, which netted $584 for Excelsior, from the "sale" of slaves Vito, James, Wayne, and the hotel's Danny, and masters Ricardo, Stevie, Miguel, George, and Messrs. FI Leather 2004 Jeff Goodman and '07 Diego. Jeff and Stevie fetched some of the highest prices and Jo Ann Wadsworth, of the Pennsylvania club Philadelphians, and Excelsior President Gabriel Rivas each scored winning bids for multiple masters and slaves.
