Into the Pines Kitchen contains 200 recipes from 100 contributors, including Pines notables Scott Bromley, Gilbert Parker, and Hal Rubinstein. May 25, 2009 - The annual Cherry Grove Memorial Day Service, an afternoon of fitting tributes, organized by Dominic DeSantis, of the Grove's volunteer Fire Department, took place at the Grove Community House on May 25.
After Dominic's opening remarks about this being the "time of year we have to honor the ones that left us during the cold season," John Nieman, at the piano, played a soothing "Träumerei," Opus 15, No. 7 of Robert Schumann, followed later by John's own contemplative arrangement of Irving Kahal and Sammy Fain's "I'll Be Seeing You" to help us reflect on those we've loved and lost.
Cherry Grove Community Association, Inc., President Diane Romano, also of the Fire Department, said, "We acknowledge the people we knew and loved who have died ... we are never going to not miss them," adding, "This is a day that appeals to tender personal memories ... hopefully we die young, but as late as possible." Diane read a poem of remembrance, entitled "When I Am Gone," and also urged us to remember the troops, fighting against terrorism.
Arts Project of Cherry Grove President Michael Coffindaffer said, "It's so difficult to express in words what a loss is about ... you have to get through it, find ways to heal yourself."
Adding some poignant commentary, Dominic then read the names of those friends and neighbors that the Grove has lost, including Rev. Dr. Charles E. Whipple, always a fixture of past Memorial Day Services-"We'll miss his endearing speeches ... Charles will always be with us because he's with the dunes, the Fire Department, and watching over the community;" Greg Cheplin, who worked at Floyd's; Marie Fallon; Lois Fisher-"another pillar of the community;" Joe Florentino, AKA "Aunt Pittipat," of Belvedere; Hal Fried; Amelia Migliaccio-"Who could forget Amelia? ... leader of the parade, head of the Arts Project, ... taking care of everybody;" Peter Romano-"We'll miss him and we know that [longtime life partner] Wynn [Tucker] will miss him very much, too;" Robert "Bo" Sherman; Freddy, of Cloud Nine; and Sandy Norris; and added a note about the "beloved pets of the Grove."
Dominic concluded with, "Sometimes, when you're walking along the boardwalk and you don't know what to do, just lift up your eyes and say, 'we miss you,'" before we departed, with a neighborly greeting of peace.
