At the Arts Project of Cherry Grove (APCG) "A Star Is Born" Membership Party, at the Community House on May 24, Urban Sprawl, who is also an APCG Board Member and does hair for Broadway theater, was selected as the Grove's 34th Homecoming Queen (HQ) by popular acclaim, beating eight other contenders, seven of them serious, in a contest run by Panzi and Bella. Ann Phetamine was the runner-up and Robin Kradles, past Empress of New York, and Viking Queen Aida Herring, past APCG Board Member and past Emperor of New York, in full Brünnhilde regalia-horned helmet, shiny breastplate, sword, and animal pelts-were the other finalists. Crystal, Tony Bondi, Ruby Delight, and Renée Flaming-who sang, impromptu and a cappella, a few phrases from "Summertime"-were the remaining serious competitors. Zondra Foxx also entered, well, just because.
When the Mistresses of Ceremonies asked contestants why they wanted to be HQ, Aida, brandishing her sword, declared, "Make me HQ so I can rape and pillage the Pines" and Robin said, "I want to be HQ so I can be at the opening of an envelope at 8 a.m. in full face." Dismissing all the others' statements as "self-serving crap," Urban, sassy as her flaming orange head of hair, said frankly, "I want to be Queen because I want you all to bow and scrape!"
Margo, HQ 2008, who crowned Urban, stepped down from her post with a number in which she observed, "I am a Queen for tonight," and queried, "but will I have a King tomorrow?" Bella had noted, "We have seven contestants [until the late additions] that really want this crown. They're wearing jungle red!" alluding to the hue of the talons of the dramatis personae of "The Women." Among her comments of the evening, Panzi quipped, "There are only three religious truths: Jews don't recognize Jesus as the Messiah, Protestants don't recognize the Pope as their leader, and Mormons don't recognize each other in a gay bar."
As HQ, Urban will lead the Grove's 34th annual Fourth of July Invasion of the Pines.
