Under the auspices of the Arts Project of Cherry Grove (APCG), Pines Animal Welfare Society's (PAWS) Cherry Grove leader Valerie Perez and brilliant director Donald Labohn welcomed Grovites to the Community House on September 13 to celebrate PAWS' 15th birthday by reliving the very first PAWS benefit, "Mme Stephanie's Scandals" (1993), at the Ice Palace, directed by Donald.

An enthusiastic audience cheered the videotaped performances as if they were new. The late Mme Stephanie opened her "Scandals" with a hot salute to the spirit of voodoo and an invitation to "Join the Jubilee." Cobra made her debut as Card Girl, introducing acts to strains of "The Stripper" and sporting different garb for almost every entrance. A purring Charity did a steamy "Whatever Lola Wants," from "Damn Yankees," complete with teasing striptease. Tony Bondi, in raingear, wistfully offered, "It's been raining in my heart" and turned into a terror on roller skates, hoofing in "I'd Rather Be Blue," from "Funny Girl." Shapiro Sisters Sylvia (Donald) and Shirley (Evan Kane) became the Barry Sisters, dressed for shopping and delivering a Passover medley. There were Andrews Sisters songs, a Betty Boop number, "It's Hard to Be Diva"-Sharon McNight's star turn from "Starmites," "Bosom Buddies" from "Mame," a cat duet, and "Temptation" as accompaniment for an S&M scene before the grand finale, Mme Stephanie leading her company in "Think Pink."

After the screening, Cobra made an in-person appearance; Charity revisited "Whatever Lola Wants," with sensible shoes to change into as one of few concessions to the passage of years; and Tony Bondi daringly glided about the stage in roller skates once more in "I'd Rather Be Blue."

The glamorous Coco Love, Margo, Lola, and Ann-Phetamine sold sodas, popcorn, and penny candy (now $1) before the show and Urban Sprawl assisted audience members in finding their seats. Kudos to Matt Baney and Sherri Rase for handling technical matters.
