On September 7, at the 43rd annual Miss Fire Island Contest, at the Ice Palace/Grove Hotel, Arts Project of Cherry Grove President and Grove Homecoming Queen 2006 Coco Love was crowned Miss Fire Island 2008, succeeding Stephanie Stone as the titleholder. Nikki Starr followed mate Viva Sexx as Ms. Fire Island and Shi-Queeta-Lee, who did Tina Turner, inherited the Entertainer of the Year mantle from Sugga Pie Koko.
Ariel Sinclair, Bella and Porsche were the contest's Mistresses of Ceremonies. When Ariel introduced Brandon Cutrell, singer of Johnny Savoy's "Ballad of Miss Fire Island," as "a power bottom," he protested, "My mother is here!" and proceeded to introduce Stephanie Stone, taking her final walk as Miss FI '07, as "a power top."
Taking other prizes were, as runners-up to Coco Love, Renée Flaming, the new Miss Cherry Grove, and Martina Skyy, now Miss Ice Palace; as runner-up to Nikki Starr, Ambrosia, former New York City Gay Men's Chorus Queen, crowned Ms. Cherry Grove; as Most Popular, the audience favorite, Jason Cozmo, who made lightning-quick changes from Dolly Gallagher Levi ("Hello, Dolly") to a "Chicago" flapper ("All that Jazz") to a grown-up Annie ("Tomorrow" parody) to Liza Minnelli ("New York, New York") in the course of his prize-winning number; and receiving the Judges' Award, Logan Hardcore.
Among those pressed into service as judges, after Hurricane Hanna caused postponement of the pageant by a day, were Charity, the second Miss FI ('68), and Rita George, the third Miss FI ('69), the earliest living Miss FIs. Charity bid farewell to the hurricane by performing "Hard-Hearted Hannah (the vamp of Savanna GA)." Other judges were Sybil Bruncheon, Jeannie Lieberman, Lillias Piro, Valerie Perez and Kenny Holcomb.
Receiving sponsors awards were Bastard Amber-the Red Bull award; Courtney Summers-favored by Next magazine; China-the Absolut award; Desiray-receiving the Southern Comfort award for her demented Joan Crawford in "Mommie Dearest," accompanied by "Crazy," "I'm Going Bananas," and the "Psycho" music; and Delfina-the Coors Light award.
Sal Piro was Executive Producer of the contest; Jamie Jordan, Maria Elena Passaretti and Jeffrey Wallach were contestant coordinators; Dennis McConkey was the Tally Judge; and Manny Ojeda was the technical director.
Other contenders meriting mention were, for Miss Fire Island, Lola Galore; for Entertainer of the Year, Josie, Dakota Sue and Billy Little; and for Ms. FI, Rae Lindsay.
