Having made it into the top 40 "America's Got Talent" finalists, but not into the top 20, Shequida returned, to warm acclaim, to the Ice Palace on September 13 and, bravely, not only wore the same pink dress she wore on the night she was eliminated, but also opened by singing the same song-"I Will Survive" in high soprano, complete with cadenza-that failed to impress the NBC-TV show's judges at the beginning of the month. She endured, as well, the good-natured, if merciless razzing of DJ Chuck, quick to recreate the sound of the fatal buzzer and other unfortunate "Talent" moments, and of colleagues Porsche, Rhett Kalman and Logan Hardcore, impersonating the implacable panel of judges. Porsche, in particular, offered a dead-on Sharon Osborne.
Shequida shared hair-raising tales of waiting, in drag, in a freezing room, for more than 12 hours a day for her chance to perform, only to be told, once she was to go on, of faulty scenery with which she would have to contend. She sang us favorite numbers "Don'cha (wish your girlfriend was hung like me);" "I Who Have Nothing/Yo te quiero," bilingually, with words pointedly adapted; "Luck, Be a Lady;" "Carwash;" and "Tranny Singer," her version of "Private Dancer," also with interpolated high cadenza.
Shequida sang part of "Hatikva," the Israeli national anthem, in Hebrew, and part of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody," with Porsche. She concluded with "Nessun dorma," the tenor aria from "Turandot," sung as a soprano aria.
Welcome back, Shequida!
