Who expects a sensational singer to come out of left field this late in the season? But Sadé Pendarvis took listeners by surprise with her varied show at the Ice Palace on Labor Day, displaying a vibrant voice and proving a spirited performer. With Porsche's recommendation that she be heard, could she be bad? DJ Chuck assisted.
From "Good morning, Baltimore," from "Hairspray," Sadé Pendarvis proceeded to a pair of Nina Simone songs ("I put a spell on you," "My baby just cares for me"), then some Eric Clapton ("If I could change the world"). "I believe in you and me," she sang romantically, dulcetly, before turning to an upbeat "Little Red Corvette."
Porsche joined Sadé for two numbers ("The best thing about being a woman," "I try to say goodbye and I choke. I try to walk away and I stumble").
Sadé showed, with "Papa, Don't Preach," her way with a Madonna number, and with "Simply the Best" and "Private Dancer," her feeling for a Tina Turner tune. "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me," "Signed, sealed, delivered, (I'm yours)," and "Young Amercan" were other Sadé songs. We're sure to hear from her again.
