Grovettes, victorious.

On August 6, at the annual Cherry Bowl volleyball tournament, the Suffolk County Police team, the Copettes, won the first game 15 to 12, Cherry Grove's Grovettes won the second, 15 to 12, but the Grovettes emerged victorious in the third, deciding game, beating the Copettes 15 to 6. The games have been played here since 1984.

Sal Piro called the first and third games and Paul Jablonski, the second game. Doreen Rallo was the referee, Rae DeStefano and Ellen Biggers were the line judges, and Paul threw out the first ball. Paul was one of three participants in the 1984 games present. Mark Atten, who played once again for the Grove team, was another and retired Officer Richard Bishop, who observed, was the third.

At the start of the afternoon, Kelly King sang the "Star Spangled Banner," giving it a country twang. Porsche, backed by the cheerleading Cherry Tarts, sang "Bad Girls" and the title song from "Dreamgirls" between games and the Cherry Tarts drew both police, divesting them of their shirts, and police supporters into their dance. The Suffolk County Police Emerald Society Pipe and Drum Corps played "God Bless America," "Over There" and "Amazing Grace" between the second and third games.
