The Concerned Women of the Grove (CWOG) held its 13th annual Breast Cancer Benefit, raising funds for Gilda's Club, New York City, and the Stony Brook Center for Breast Cancer Research, on the grounds of Heaven 'n' Earth, spacious home of Diane Romano and Pat Goff, on the beautiful, sunny afternoon of August 9.

The centerpiece of the benefit was a silent auction of baskets of cheer and skin and beauty products; hand-painted Japanese fans; New York Mets memorabilia, Mets and Yankees tickets, and an autographed photo of NY Yankee Derek Jeter; DVDs and CDs; framed photos by Dr. Rick Byrd, Bobbie Lerch, Susan Silverman (on canvas), with giclées by Diane Romanello and Lorraine Michels ("Sunrise through the Reeds"); a framed needlepoint by Dr. Patrick Fratellone; a framed vintage Life magazine ad for Smirnoff vodka with Woody Allen, signed by Allen; gift certificates for hair cuts and coloring, massage, for Garden Grove, and for dinners at local, Long Island and New York City restaurants; jewelry; theater, ballet, opera and Madonna concert tickets; a guitar signed by k.d. lang; an autographed photo of Ellen Degeneres; and passes for Disney World and Hershey Park.

A highlight of the event was a show, with Donna Piranha as Mistress of Ceremonies. Donna began with a Janet Jackson number, dedicated to those we've lost to breast cancer, and then brought all the CWOG volunteers to the stage. "A hero lies in you," Viva Sexx insisted in her song. Nikki Starr portrayed Cher, offering a medley of "Half Breed," "Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves," and "Dark Lady." Donna closed by auctioning off her pink dress and shoes, which netted $500 for the beneficiaries and were won by Bobbie Green, and, in her final selection, queried, "What have you done today to make you feel proud?"

Also meriting mention were the tasty hors d'oeuvres, passed around all afternoon, and issuing from a kitchen overseen by Mella Yodice.
