For its final night fare, on August 28 at the Community House, the Fire Island Film & Video Festival, presented by the Arts Project of Cherry Grove and the Long Island Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, focused on the ups and downs of relationships. These were the concerns of Casper Andreas' feature "Between Love & Goodbye" (USA, 2008, 97 minutes) and David Maurice Gil and Edward Gunawan's short "just" (USA, 2007, 12 minutes). Making a first in-person appearance at the festival, writer and director Andreas, whose comedies with Jesse Archer, "Slutty Summer" and "Four Letter Word," were shown here in 2004 and 2007 respectively, and producer, writer and actor Gunawan, a Fire Island virgin, visiting from California, introduced and answered questions about their work.
In Andreas' intensely disturbing, absorbing new film, a queer family story, set in the East Village, and taking some strange twists and turns, including serious brushes with the law, Kyle (Simon Miller) and Marcel (Justin Tensen) begin as a sweet couple, whose love sours and disintegrates before our eyes. Marcel, an actor from France, marries their lesbian friend, Sarah (Jane Elliott), in order to get his green card and remain with Kyle, who, like Sarah, is a musician. Enter April/Cole (Rob Harmon), Kyle's troubled tranny sister, who drives a wedge between the lovers. "Between Love & Goodbye" is the name of a song Kyle writes for his and April's band, Inertia's Kiss, as the couple's careers, confessions-and Kyle's sibling-make the rift increasingly irreparable.
In "just," Gunawan and Keo Woolford's characters, having just tricked, probe the former's recent past relationship and the latter's open, but fraying partnership.
Andreas' next projects are entitled "Big Gay Musical" and "Going Down in La-La Land." Gunawan is undertaking additional short films and a feature about the Miss Indonesia Pageant. The Long Island festival runs from November 14 to 20 at the Cinema Arts Centre, 423 Park Avenue in Huntington. For further information, visit www.LIGLFF.org.
