Demi-Tasse proved a 'hostess with the mostest,' on July 27 at the Ice Palace, as Mistress of Ceremonies of a first, rich and varied show of her own in Cherry Grove. DJ Chuck was on sound and Frank Burdi, Demi's mate for the past 24 years, worked the spotlight.
Demi opened the show as Boy George, promising, "I'll tumble for you" and, as a biker chick with lavender hair, backed by Todd and Peter--the trio a symphony of glitz, black leather and vinyl, and chains--declared her love to be "River deep and mountain high."
Demi's guest, Bella, invested "Native New Yorker" and "Milkman, keep those bottles quiet" with boundless energy, and lovely Nikki Starr gave us Cher, observing "We all sleep alone" and commenting ominously on "The long, winding road." For "I Am What I Am," Martina Skyy doffed sedate black-and-white stripes to reveal glitzy, gay and proud rainbow colors.
Ariel Sinclair and our hostess became dueling Demis as Barbra Streisand, answering "One less Bell" and finding that "A House Is not a Home," with the real Demi, bent on doing violence to her would-be rival, having Todd and Peter bind and gag her, and then, Mommie Dearest-style, shearing off her captive's 'beautiful hair.' With knife tucked into her kimono's obi and severed head in hand, Ariel wondered, "How can I ease the pain?" in a number that left her-and the stage-fully bloody by the end.
For the climax of her evening, Demi-Tasse was Barbra as the young Fanny Brice, bursting with untapped potential, in "I'm the Greatest Star," from "Funny Girl."
