As the centerpiece of the Full Moon Party, favorite disco diva France Joli, assisted by DJ Susan Levine, returned to Cherry Grove, on July 19, to celebrate the birthday of David Sce, co-owner, with Jacqué Piazza and Donna Bianco, of Cherry's on the Bay.
La Joli began by demanding, of a false and "cruel" love, "(How could you have) The Heart to Break a Heart?" but bravely vowed, "Gonna Get over You."
The singer, from Montréal, confessed that she found it heartwarming that "I always have a place to sing and it's right here" and declared it "a thrill for me to sing to my gay crowd." She recalled the days of the Disco Era with a medley of 1970s selections, including, "Last Dance," "We Are Family," "Dancing Queen," "Disco Inferno," and "Saturday Night Fever."
Joli led the audience in singing "Happy Birthday" to David and followed it with an a cappella "Hallelujah" to wish him improved health. She invited an idolatrous crowd to join her in singing her still-popular 1979 hit, "Come to Me," with her; thanked us for our "unconditional" "love..., support..., and encouragement;" and, like a latter day Kate Smith, concluded with a proud a cappella sing-along of "God Bless America."
