It is invariably rather sad to leave Fire Island for the season, especially if summer has been full of memorable events, large-scale and small, public and private. As businesses close and shows and parties come to an end, the Island's four-legged and winged inhabitants reclaim their space from the communities' temporary, two-legged occupants.

Among my memories of this year on Fire Island, as summer turned to fall, are watching a cardinal courtship on the ledge of a neighboring balcony, as he raised his wings and did his mating dance for his mate, and coming across much of a deer skeleton, graceful even in death, just off a well-trodden path in the woods.
Nature unveils a rare palette in the hues of autumn leaves on trees in our towns and in the woods in between them. People take costly Fall Color tours of New England, Pennsylvania and upstate New York, but Nature puts on as spectacular a show for us right here at home. As our season comes to an end, each remaining Fire Island sunset, rivaling subtropical and tropical ones for intense, fiery color, becomes precious.
